Robert Farling

Robert Finley Farling, 67, of Presque Isle died peacefully in his home on Saturday, December 15, 2012 following a long battle with cancer. Bob was the beloved son of George and Mildred Farling of Canton, North Carolina, the loving husband of Judy (Hambrick) Farling and devoted father of Christopher Farling. Bob is lovingly remembered by daughter in law, Heather Heide Farling; her parents Ann and Henry Heide; his uncle, Fred Farling; brother in law, Peter Hambrick; niece, Allison Hambrick Sarchett and her husband, Robin; nephew, Michael Hambrick; cousins, MaryAnne Osborn, Jane Sturgis and Patti Hill. He is further remembered by Christopher's mother, Alice Dietrich Farling and her mother, Dorothy Mattingly. Bob is also remembered by many friends in Presque Isle, Chicago and across the nation. Bob was born in Daytona Beach, Florida and grew up in Rawson, Ohio and Muncie, Indiana where he attended Ball State University, graduating in 1967 with a degree in economics. While at Ball State he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and Blue Key Honor fraternity. Later while working in Chicago, he earned a Masters in Business Administration at Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate School of Management. Bob served in the US Navy in Vietnam from 1967 to 1970, earning the rank of Lieutenant JG on the destroyer the USS Meredith. His thirty year career as a fixed income trader began at Continental Bank in Chicago in 1970. It was here that he met and married Judy in 1975. Bob furthered his career at First National Bank of Chicago and JP Morgan Chase, becoming a Vice President. Bob and Judy discovered the northwoods of Wisconsin in 1985 and soon built a vacation home on Spider Lake in Manitowish Waters where they enjoyed fishing and boating, as well as cross country skiing in the winter. In 2001, they moved permanently to Presque Isle where they built a home on Presque Isle Lake. Bob was very involved in the design and building of their home. Throughout his life Bob loved music – rock, blues and jazz. He particularly loved listening to his son Chris on the guitar and saxophone. When moving to northern Wisconsin he quickly became an enthusiastic fan of local artists, Brett and Frisk. Bob had a passion for collecting – first for country antiques, a hobby he shared with Judy. He also collected antique fishing lures and more recently southwest American Indian jewelry. For the past four and a half years he was an active member of the Howard Young Board of Directors where he served as secretary. Bob loved playing golf, walking his dogs, and most importantly being with friends and family. Everyone that knew Bob saw a caring, kind, supportive and loving person who loved his life and all the people in it. He will be greatly missed. The family requests that memorials be given to the Howard Young Foundation/Special Gifts Initiative, P.O. Box 470, Woodruff, WI 54568. A Memorial Service will be held at the Skyview Restaurant, Cty. Rd. W, in Presque Isle on Monday, January 14, 2013 at 11:30 AM.
