Joan E. Walters

Joan Walters, 79, of Harshaw, died on Sunday October 5, 2014 at her home in Harshaw. She was born on June 5, 1935 in Wausau to Albert and Olga (Pophal) Weber. She attended school in the town of Hewitt until the sixth grade, then went to St. Johns Lutheran School and graduated from Wausau High School in 1953. She married the love of her life, David Walters, on June 18, 1955 in St. John’s Lutheran Church in the Town of Easton. They moved to Lake Tomahawk the same year to begin their ‘northwoods’ adventure. Throughout her lifetime she held various jobs including working at Rhinelander Paper, Lakeland Times, in the family grocery store and laundromat in Lake Tomahawk, and as a professional painter for Poggemann Construction. Joan loved her family and friends. She enjoyed polka music and dancing. She was a HUGE Packers fan who was passionate about her team in good years and bad. One of her greatest joys was meeting Bart Star at his home in Green Bay. Go Packers! Joan was a founding member of the NewTom Sno-Fleas snowmobile club of Lake Tomahawk and volunteered many hours to the club. One of the many tasks was selling ads for the first trail map the club produced She was a passionate golfer taking many awards, including ladies club champion for several years, at Pinewood Golf Course in Harshaw. She loved growing geraniums and carefully nurturing plant slips over the cold winter months. She and David spent many winters in Perdido Key, FL. She took great pleasure creating quilts for cancer patients and members of her church in her church quilting circle. Joan is survived by her husband, David, of Harshaw; daughter Tammy of Eagle, CO; her sister Ruth Schmieden, Wausau; nieces, nephews, other family and many friends. Visitation will be on Thursday October 9, 2014 from 5-7 PM at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Minocqua, WI and one hour prior the service on Friday at the church. A funeral service for Joan will be held on Friday October 10, 2014 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Minocqua, WI. 11 AM. Pastor James Hoogervorst will officiate. Interment will be in Union Grove Cemetery, Harshaw, WI. In lieu of flowers the family encourages contributions to the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran School. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the angels of Ministry Dr. Kate Hospice and St. Josephs Palliative Care Unit in Marshfield, WI.
