John H. Burlingame

John Hunter Burlingame was born in Milwaukee, WI on April 27, 1933. John’s parents were Leroy James Burlingame and Mary Janet Burchard Burlingame. John grew up in Shorewood, WI. He attended Milwaukee Normal School and Milwaukee Country Day School. (Later called University School) He then graduated from Phillip Exeter Academy in Exeter, NH. John was a graduate of University of Wisconsin with both undergraduate and law degrees. He served as a Naval pilot in the 1950’s. John joined the Law firm of BakerHostetler of Cleveland, OH in 1963 where he had a distinguished career until his retirement in 1997. He was thought of as “honest and straight forward, with classic Midwestern values that reflected his Wisconsin roots”. John first started spending the summers in his beloved North Woods when he was two years old. His parents purchased their first home on Big Muskellunge Lake in Boulder Junction, WI in 1939, and moved across the lake to the Sayner side in 1941. He enjoyed being on the lake, watching all the birds and wildlife and playing golf. He also enjoyed playing hockey in his younger years. He was a very gentle, kind and generous man. John was a member of the Minocqua Country Club, the Weasels, and Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church. He was a corporate lawyer who did mergers and acquisitions, and joked that he and his wife of 34 years, had a “merger”. They merged 6 children together and always referred to them as “our children”. John is survived by wife, Dorcas (Dee) Hodges Burlingame of Sayner, WI: children, Carolyn Burmedi of Heidelberg, Germany, Dr. Janet Burlingame (Thomas Wilson) of Kailua, Hawaii, Amy Kritz (David) Kensington, MD, Meredith Wootters, Conway, AR, Rebecca Stiff (Robert) Sarasota, FL, and Alexander Burlingame (Jennifer) Bay Village, OH. He is also survived by 15 grand children and one great grand child, two sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 20,2016, at Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church, in Sayner, WI. Visitation is at 10 a.m. followed by the service at 11:00 a.m. A Memorial Service will also be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at Fairmount Presbyterian Church in Cleveland Heights, OH.
